Martin: Can’t count on Republicans to fund schools
By David Martin

TO THE EDITOR:
I am writing to support James Timilty for reelection as state senator and Claire Naughton for state representative.
There are many reasons to prefer these Democrats this election: concern for the environment, respect for individual rights, better health care, but certainly one of the primary reasons we need to elect these Democrats to their respective offices is that we can’t count on the Republicans to fairly fund our school system.
I did some research on the state budget allocation for Mansfield schools over the last few years and found that if we had to rely exclusively on the Republicans to fund our schools over the last two years, we would have had $509,965 less in the Mansfield school budget. Mansfield has one of the best school systems in the state (and one of the best in the nation) a fact we can all be very proud of. Imagine having to cut another $500,000 from our school budget. A cut like that would have resulted in Mansfield laying off additional teachers or making due with bigger class sizes or perhaps eliminating some of the advanced programs we have for our students.
The state’s Republican governor has consistently recommended under-funding Mansfield schools in each of the last two years. We can’t afford to let this happen to our schools. By electing the Democrats we ensure Mansfield schools stay well funded. We can count on Senator Timilty and Representative Naughton to fight for fair school funding for Mansfield.
You can see the budget numbers I researched at www.mansfielddems.org or if you want to check the sources I used, go to these websites: the Governor’s budget recommendations are available at www.mass.gov/bb/ and the final budgets passed by the Legislature can be found at www.mass.gov/legis/budgets/previous_fiscal.htm.
Look at the facts and vote for the Democrats to keep Mansfield schools strong.
